    Prednisone effects on blood sugar

Does anyone know how long prednisone will affect blood sugar? A doctor put me on 80 mg doses to treat one of my immune system diseases. My glucose ran up to 300 and I started having to urinate all the time. I was on a 5 day course of 30 mg a day for bronchitis and stopped it 5 days ago but am running at significantly higher sugars than I am used to. Life has gotten in the way--work, family, sick (RA), etc. He wasn't happy because my A1C still holding at 6.4 for the past 3 blood tests (since August). I got a shot in the shoulder, and was told my sugar could go up to 500. Stopped using predinisone and started using Humira. How long does blood sugar stay elevated after prednisone use is stopped? (I am currently controlling it with diet and exercise but have not been able to exercise too well due to a broken ankle 1.5 years ago.) Does anyone out there have experience using prednisolone? My 3-year-old son was just diagnosed with bronchitis after having weeks of coughing, sometimes bad enough to make him throw up. After a week or so I called my doc and asked and was told it should return in one week. I had a similar situation that doubled my insulin requirements for several weeks. This was great for several years until I developed actinimycosis (a bacteria that acts like a fungus) growing in my right lung. It's two almost three weeks and I'm still running my basal rate at 140%. As others have said, it really depends on the individual. My left foot like yours is broken ( the tip of my tibia ). I take Uceris, a steroid that is time released, so it does not affect my glucose levels. I am starting Metformin tomorrow due to an A1c of 7.0 last week which I know can be a lot worse…but I’m terrified of side effects!!! I was doing more exercise and got it down to about 140 but with my bad ankle, I had to stop so its back to the 150-160…sigh. Autumn is approaching with its beautiful fall foliage, hayrides at the pumpkin patch, and harvest festivals, as well as its sniffles and running noses. Cold and flu season is a drab for everyone, but can be particularly worrisome for people with diabetes. In addition to worrying about how being sick will affect their glucose levels and whether or not cold and flu medications are sugar free, being prescribed corticosteroid (steroids) adds a whole other layer of concern. Medtronic Diabetes Clinical Manager, Beth Spencer Kline, MSN, RN, NP-C, CD is back to discuss an important aspect of diabetes management, steroid effects on blood glucose. Steroids are medications used to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. Steroid treatment is commonly prescribed for short periods of time to treat conditions such as rashes, musculoskeletal pain, injury, and respiratory ailments. However, steroids can also be prescribed for longer periods of time to treat certain inflammatory disorders, autoimmune disorders, and organ transplants.

She has shared her “Ask the Diabetes Educator” advice columns from that program with Insulin Nation. Question: Sometimes my doctor prescribes steroids or gives me a steroid injection when I’m sick. This always makes my blood sugar levels go up, and nothing I do seems to get them down. Answer: The use of steroids (glucocorticoids) can cause significantly high blood sugar levels. These hormones decrease the effectiveness of insulin and make your liver dump more glucose into your bloodstream. Some people can have blood sugars as high as 400 mg/d L to 500 mg/d L while taking steroids. These kinds of levels can lead to the need for hospitalization, IV fluids, and/or extra insulin in people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.
